The High School Health and Wellness (HSHW) Program is a comprehensive, primary prevention substance abuse program. A grant awarded to PAHS through the Governor's Office of Youth, Faith, and Family brings an impactful substance use prevention service to youth. PAHS uses several strategies to promote this goal. We have a club on campus called Something Better. It is a voluntary healthy living club focusing on ways to stay drug, alcohol, and tobacco free. It also teaches mindfulness, coping skills, yoga, and how to improve emotional well-being. Something Better meets every Friday in Room 112 at 12:30pm. Our Prevention Coach, Erica Reed, teaches an evidence-based curriculum to all freshman. We participate in national prevention activities including Red Ribbon Week and National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week by holding campus contests and lunch time activities. We invite guest speakers from the Peoria Police Department, notMYKid, and the Arizona Attorney General’s Office to give student, parent, and staff workshops.
