Congratulations to Peoria Accelerated's art teacher, Ms. Margaret Lieu for getting her "Subtractive Sculpture" project funded on DonorsChoose.Org. The project took just weeks to be funded and will benefit the 2016-17 Arts Humanities students.
The requested materials will teach students to learn the principle of positive and negative space as well as some sculpting techniques. The foam is easy to carve, so depending on the student's fine motor skills and prior knowledge, he/she can put more or less detail. The metallic paints and patinas actually chemically react. In this case, we will study the effects of rust on steel and how the curves in the sculpture and patinas help to create depth and interest. As a result of our generous donors, tudents will gain artistic, science, and problem solving skills. These skills will help the students gain confidence in thoughtful risk taking, and creative inquiry. This project will help students realize that they can all be artists. Not to mention it's just plain fun!
